Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, or BHEL, has achieved a major milestone in India’s power-equipment journey by developing the country’s first 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage Alternating Current transformer.
According to BHEL’s official release, the company indigenously developed, manufactured and successfully tested India’s first 1200 kV, 333 MVA UHVAC transformer through in-house know-how. BHEL said this achievement placed India among a select group of countries with this advanced technology.

What Is a 1200 kV Transformer?

BHEL said the 333 MVA, 1150/400/33 kV single-phase auto transformer was developed for PowerGrid’s experimental 1200 kV National Test Station at Bina, Madhya Pradesh.

BHEL’s current product portfolio also lists power transformers for voltage up to 1200 kV, showing that India has built domestic capability in this critical area.
