Modi-Trump Bilateral Meeting at G7: India and USA Push Trade, Maritime Security and Strategic Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump held an important bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. The meeting came at a critical time for India-USA relations, with both countries dealing with trade negotiations, maritime security concerns, West Asia tensions and global economic uncertainty.
This was the first face-to-face meeting between Modi and Trump since PM Modi’s visit to Washington in February 2025. Speaking at the meeting, PM Modi said India-U.S. relations had gained “new speed and new energy” and that both countries were working together in several key areas.
One of the biggest issues raised by PM Modi was the safety of Indian seafarers. India has hundreds of thousands of sailors working on international maritime routes, including near the Strait of Hormuz. After recent incidents involving Indian sailors in the Gulf region, Modi made it clear that their safety is a top priority for India.
PM Modi also highlighted the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. This waterway is one of the world’s most important oil and trade routes. Any disruption can affect fuel prices, shipping costs and inflation across the world. For India, which imports most of its crude oil, maritime security is directly linked to the economy and household budgets.
President Trump called the meeting “very good” and said the United States and India were working on trade deals. He also described PM Modi as a “tough negotiator,” a statement that reflects India’s firm approach in protecting its economic interests.
Trump also made a strong remark on defence ties, saying that if India were attacked, the United States would be there to help. His statement attracted attention because it came at a time when India and the U.S. are trying to balance cooperation with disagreements over tariffs, energy purchases and regional security.
Trade remained a major focus. India and the United States have been trying to resolve tariff issues and build a stronger economic partnership. A successful trade understanding could benefit both countries by boosting exports, creating jobs and strengthening supply chains in technology, defence, energy and manufacturing.
The meeting also had a wider geopolitical message. India is no longer just an invited partner at global summits. It is now a major voice in discussions on energy security, maritime trade, artificial intelligence, terrorism, supply chains and global stability.
For PM Modi, the meeting was an opportunity to put India’s priorities clearly on the global stage: protect Indian citizens, secure trade routes, strengthen economic ties and maintain strategic autonomy. For President Trump, it was a chance to reset momentum with one of America’s most important Indo-Pacific partners.
The Modi-Trump G7 meeting shows that India-U.S. relations remain strong, but also realistic. Both sides have differences, but they also know that cooperation is necessary in a changing world.
From trade to seafarer safety, from defence to energy security, this bilateral meeting could shape the next phase of India-USA relations.
